In light of the recent policy change to the dress code at Newport High School, I wanted to clarify the thought process involved in the decision.  Last year our high school faculty reported numerous instances of dress code violations relating to leggings. High school administration brought the issue in front of the board asking for clarification or a change in the policy. After much discussion, it was recommended to not allow leggings. The board voted in support of the high school administration to make the change in the policy. After much thought and consideration by the administration, understanding that the timing of the decision is a major concern, the administration has asked the board to revert to the previous policy concerning leggings. The board, again in support of the administration, has voted to approve that request. For the 2024/2025 school year, leggings will fall under the same dress code policy as last year and will be strictly enforced.  For the policy change concerning athletic shorts: (running or track shorts) which have a slit up the side or opening above the mid-thigh, will not be allowed. Other shorts will remain allowable under the previous policy. Newport School District administration understands the late timing of this change and the limited resources available for school clothing. The school board, administration, and I agreed that this policy will be revisited in early spring for the 2025/2026 school year. I apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate the understanding of the board and their efforts to support our faculty. The dress code can be found in the student handbook which will be updated and posted online in the very near future.

Thank You,
